Kelsey-approved favorites for that dreamy, summer glow

There’s just something magical about water sessions… the movement, the reflections, the soft light. It gives your senior photos that extra little oomph. And of course, I’m obsessed with anything water-related when it comes to creating beautiful images for my seniors. It’s easily one of the top requests I get!

If you’ve been dreaming about incorporating water into your session, these are my go-to locations that photograph beautifully every single time.

Platte River State Park (Louisville, NE)

This is one of the most popular locations for senior photos in Nebraska for a reason. I love that there’s an actual waterfall here at Platte River State Park, and the heavy tree canopy allows us to shoot earlier in the day compared to many other locations. That gives us a lot more flexibility when planning your session.

Another huge bonus is the variety within the park. Between the creek, bridges, wooded areas, and all the surrounding nature spots, we’re able to get a ton of different looks without ever needing to leave the location. It truly gives us multiple backdrops in one session, which is perfect for seniors who want a lot of variety in their gallery.

For outfits, I typically recommend sticking with soft, muted tones. Flowy dresses photograph beautifully here, along with relaxed summer looks like tanks and shorts. If you want to see a full example session at this location, be sure to check out Jayce’s Senior Session blog post.

Branched Oak Lake (Raymond, NE)

Branched Oak Lake is easily one of my current go-to favorite locations for senior photos in Nebraska. It’s super easy to access, which makes your session feel relaxed right from the start, and it offers such a beautiful mix of scenery all in one place. Between the sandy shoreline, rock textures, open water, and surrounding greenery, we’re able to create a variety of looks without needing to travel between spots.

What I love most about this location is the balance it gives. You get those soft, beachy, open-water vibes while still having plenty of natural elements like trees and greenery to add depth and variety to your gallery. It photographs beautifully during golden hour, especially when the light reflects off the water and creates that dreamy, glowing look.

This location works really well throughout the year, making it a great option no matter when your session is scheduled. For outfits, I always recommend leaning into soft, muted tones and flowy pieces. Dresses with small prints can really elevate your look here, especially when paired with barefoot moments in the sand or along the water’s edge.

Pioneers Park (Lincoln, NE)

Pioneers Park is a Lincoln classic and always a solid choice for senior photos. It’s one of the most popular locations for senior pictures in Lincoln, Nebraska because it offers so much variety while still being easy to access and navigate during your session.

One of the biggest advantages of this location is how many different backdrops we can use in one spot. From water features and small ponds to bridges, open grassy areas, mature trees, and even unique concrete structures, it gives us the ability to create a full, diverse gallery without needing to travel between locations.

This is a great option for seniors who want a little bit of everything—from water to nature to clean, simple backgrounds all in one session. It also works beautifully during golden hour, when the light filters through the trees and reflects off the water for that soft, glowing look.

For outfits, I recommend sticking with soft, neutral, or muted tones that complement the natural surroundings. Flowy dresses photograph especially well here, but this location is also versatile enough to pair with more casual outfits if you’re wanting a mix of looks throughout your session.

Platte River (Grand Island, NE)

This little spot along the Platte River in Grand Island is one of my favorite newer finds for senior photos in Nebraska. I’ve shot out near the Camp Augustine area before, but we came across this hidden gem along the river that gives us the perfect mix of sandbars, water, and natural textures.

What makes this location so special is how relaxed and fun it feels during a session. The sandbars are perfect for those more candid, laid-back moments, and it’s an amazing spot for seniors who don’t mind stepping into the water a bit. Especially in the summer, being able to hop into the river adds such a fun and refreshing element to your session.

The surrounding grasses and natural landscape give it that soft, organic Nebraska feel while still allowing for a variety of looks throughout your gallery. It’s a great option for seniors who want something a little more adventurous and unique compared to traditional park locations.

For outfits, I recommend sticking with light neutrals and flowy pieces that move well with the water. These tones photograph beautifully against the sandy textures and soft greenery, creating that effortless, natural look that works so well in this setting.

Crane Trust Nature Center (Wood River, NE)

The Crane Trust Nature & Visitor Center is such an underrated location for senior photos here in Nebraska, and it photographs beautifully every single time. It’s been a little while since I’ve shot out here, but every time I do, I’m reminded just how unique and stunning this location really is.

What makes this spot stand out is the variety of natural elements paired with those wide, scenic views. From the Platte River and open sandbars to the tall native grasses and wooden bridge areas, this location gives us a mix of textures and backdrops that feel a little more elevated. It’s perfect for seniors who want something a bit different from the typical park setting.

I especially love this location in the fall when the tones start to soften and warm up. Muted pastels and neutral outfits photograph beautifully here and really help your skin tones and personality stand out against the natural backdrop. It’s one of those locations that feels calm, open, and effortlessly pretty in every direction we turn.

Tips for Water Sessions

If you’re planning a senior session with water, there are just a few simple things to keep in mind to make the most of your experience.

I always recommend bringing a second pair of shoes so you can easily move between locations without worrying about getting everything wet. Planning at least one outfit that works well with water is also key. Flowy dresses tend to photograph beautifully and add that soft movement that really brings images to life.

Don’t be afraid to get a little wet during your session. Some of the best images happen when you lean into the moment, whether that’s stepping into the water or sitting along the shoreline. Soft neutrals and muted tones photograph best in these settings and help keep the overall look light, natural, and timeless.

And one last tip… always bring a change of clothes for the ride home. You’ll thank yourself later.

Each of these locations offers a slightly different feel, which is why I love helping my seniors choose a spot that truly fits their personality and vision.

Some seniors are drawn to the soft, beachy look of open water, while others love the mix of greenery and natural textures. No matter which direction you’re leaning, we’ll walk through all of the details during your pre-session planning so everything feels easy and completely put together.
